An update to the Ubuntu 20.04.5 LTS distribution has been formed, which includes changes aimed at improving hardware support, updating the Linux kernel and graphics stack, fixing bugs in the installer and bootloader. It also includes current updates for several hundred packages related to vulnerability mitigation and stability issues. Similar updates for Ubuntu Budgie 20.04.5 LTS, Kubuntu 20.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 20.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 20.04.5 LTS, Lubuntu 20.04.5 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 20.04.5 LTS, and Xubuntu 20.04.5 LTS are also presented.
The release includes several improvements backported from the Ubuntu 22.04 release:
- Packages with Linux kernel version 5.15 are proposed (the Ubuntu 20.04 uses kernel 5.4, and kernel 5.13 was additionally proposed in 20.04.4).
- Components of the graphics stack have been updated, including Mesa 22.0, which were tested in the Ubuntu 22.04 release. New versions of video drivers for Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA chips have been added.
- Versions of the packages ceph 15.2.16, PostgreSQL 12.10, ubuntu-advantage-tools 27.10, openvswitch 2.13.8, modemmanager 1.18, cloud-init 22.2, snapd 2.55.5 have been updated.
In the desktop builds (Ubuntu Desktop), the new kernel and graphics stack are offered by default. For server systems (Ubuntu Server), the new kernel has been added as an option in the installer. Using the new builds makes sense only for new installations — previously installed systems can receive all changes present in Ubuntu 20.04.5 through the standard update system.
It is worth reminding that a rolling model of update support is used for delivering new versions of the kernel and graphics stack, according to which backported kernels and drivers will only be supported until the next point release of the LTS branch of Ubuntu. For example, the Linux kernel 5.13 proposed in this release will be supported until the output of Ubuntu 20.04.5, which will offer the kernel from Ubuntu 22.04. The initially supplied base kernel 5.4 will be supported throughout the entire five-year support cycle.
To revert Ubuntu Desktop to the base kernel 5.4, the command should be executed:
sudo apt install —install-recommends linux-generic
To install the new kernel on Ubuntu Server, run:
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04
