An update for the Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS distribution has been released, which includes changes aimed at improving hardware support, updating the Linux kernel, and fixing issues in the installer and bootloader. It also includes up-to-date updates for several hundred packages related to addressing vulnerabilities and stability issues. Simultaneously, similar updates for Kubuntu 22.04.5, Ubuntu Budgie 22.04.5, Ubuntu MATE 22.04.5, Lubuntu 22.04.5, Ubuntu Kylin 22.04.5, Ubuntu Studio 22.04.5, and Xubuntu 22.04.5 have been presented.
The release includes some improvements backported from the Ubuntu 24.04 release. In particular, packages with kernel 6.8 have been offered for cloud services Google, Oracle, AWS, and Azure, as well as for the RISC-V platform and configurations requiring low latency. In other cases, kernels 6.5 and 5.15 continue to be supplied. Versions of packages cloud-init 24.2, openldap 2.5.18, dpdk 21.11.6, squid 5.9, snapd 2.63.1, Rust 1.75, xdg-desktop-portal-gnome 42.1, and nvidia-graphics-drivers have been updated. Support for new Synaptics devices has been added. The ubuntu-desktop and ubuntu-desktop-minimal builds for the RISC-V architecture have been included.
Using the provided build makes sense only for older hardware, while for new systems, it is recommended to use the more up-to-date Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS release instead of the 22.04 branch. Systems installed previously can receive all changes present in Ubuntu 22.04.5 through the standard update installation system. Support for updates and security issue fixes for both the server and desktop editions of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS will last until April 2027, after which another 7 years of updates will be provided under a separate paid support (ESM, Extended Security Maintenance).
