An update for the Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS distribution has been released, which includes changes related to improved hardware support, updates to the Linux kernel and graphics stack, and bug fixes in the installer and bootloader. It also includes current updates for several hundred packages related to the elimination of vulnerabilities and issues affecting stability. Similar updates have also been released for Kubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu Budgie 24.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu MATE 24.04.2 LTS, Lubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 24.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 24.04.2 LTS, Xubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, Edubuntu 24.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu Cinnamon 24.04.2 LTS, and Ubuntu Unity 24.04.2 LTS.
The release includes some enhancements backported from Ubuntu 24.10:
- Packages with Linux kernel version 6.11 are proposed (the base kernel for Ubuntu 24.04 is 6.8).
- Components of the graphics stack have been updated, including Mesa 24.2 and libdrm 2.4.122, which were tested in the Ubuntu 24.10 release. Fresh versions of video drivers for Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA chips have been added.
- Versions of some packages have been updated, such as BIND 9.18.30, GCC 14.2, LibreOffice 24.2.7, GNOME 46.3, gnome-control-center 46.5, cloud-init 24.4, ceph 19.2.0, snapd 2.66.1, .NET 8.0.11.
- Support for SoundWire on AMD platforms has been added.
In the desktop builds (Ubuntu Desktop), the new kernel and graphics stack are offered by default. For server systems (Ubuntu Server), the new kernel is added as an option in the installer. Using the new builds makes sense only for new installations — previously installed systems can receive all changes present in Ubuntu 24.04.2 through the regular update installation system.
It is worth noting that a rolling update support model is applied for the delivery of new versions of the kernel and graphics stack, according to which backported kernels and drivers will be supported only until the release of the next corrective update of the LTS branch of Ubuntu. Thus, the proposed Linux kernel 6.11 will be supported until the release of Ubuntu 24.04.3, which will offer a kernel from Ubuntu 24.04. The initially provided base kernel 6.8 will be supported throughout the five-year maintenance cycle.
To revert Ubuntu Desktop to the base kernel 6.8, run the command:
sudo apt install —install-recommends linux-generic
To install the new kernel on Ubuntu Server, run:
sudo apt install —install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-24.04
