Oracle has released a corrective update for its virtualization system VirtualBox 7.2.12, which includes 3 changes. The update resolves a kernel-level crash issue in Linux host environments that could lead to a kernel panic or system hang when starting a virtual machine. This hang occurs for users of Debian 13, Arch Linux, Linux Mint, Fedora 44, and other distributions when loading the KVM module with the option ‘enable_virt_at_load=0’ set.
A workaround for the issue involves running the module kvm without the option ‘enable_virt_at_load=0’, which is specified in /etc/modprobe.d/virtualbox.conf or /usr/lib/virtualbox-dkms.conf, or unloading the KVM kernel modules kvm_intel and kvm_amd.
Additionally, VirtualBox 7.2.12 fixes NASM build issues in the extensions for Linux guest systems and host environments. Improvements have been made to the Windows guest system extensions to enhance DX11 performance.
