Valve has released VKD3D-Proton 2.4, a branch from the vkd3d codebase aimed at enhancing Direct3D 12 support in the Proton game launch package. VKD3D-Proton includes Proton-specific changes, optimizations, and improvements for better performance of Windows games based on Direct3D 12 that have not yet been merged into the main vkd3d codebase. Notably, it also focuses on leveraging modern Vulkan extensions and features from the latest graphics driver releases to achieve full compatibility with Direct3D 12.
In the new version:
- Support for sparse textures has been added.
- Various performance optimizations have been made, including reduced latency when switching virtual framebuffers (SwapChain) and faster format information retrieval.
- The application of barriers during rendering has been optimized, resulting in a noticeable performance boost (by 15%-20% in Horizon Zero Dawn, 10% in Death Stranding, and 5-10% in many other games).
- Issues have been fixed in games such as 'RE: Village', Cyberpunk 2077, GravityMark, Necromunda: Hired Gun, Horizon Zero Dawn, and DIRT 5.
