About the release of version 16 of VMWare Workstation Pro, a proprietary virtualization software suite for workstations, available for Linux as well.
The following changes occurred in this release:
- Support has been added for new guest operating systems: RHEL 8.2, Debian 10.5, Fedora 32, CentOS 8.2, SLE 15 SP2 GA, FreeBSD 11.4, and ESXi 7.0.
- For guest Windows 7 and later and Linux with the vmwgfx driver, DirectX 11 and OpenGL 4.1 are supported — with the following limitations: Windows hosts require DirectX 11 support, while Linux hosts require NVIDIA binary drivers that support OpenGL 4.5 and above.
- For Linux guest operating systems on hosts with Intel/Vulkan drivers, DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 3.3 are now supported.
- The graphics subsystem has been moved to a sandbox to enhance security.
- The virtual USB 3.1 Gen2 driver now supports transfer speeds of up to 10Gbit/sec.
- Enhanced capabilities for guest operating systems: up to 32 virtual cores, up to 128GB of virtual memory, and up to 8GB of video memory.
- Support for vSphere 7.0 has been added.
- Improved file transfer speeds between the guest and host, reduced guest shutdown time, and improved performance on NVMe disks.
- A dark theme has been added.
- Support for Shared VM and Restricted VM has been removed.
- Security vulnerabilities have been fixed: CVE-2020-3986, CVE-2020-3987, CVE-2020-3988, CVE-2020-3989, and CVE-2020-3990.
