Release of Wine-wayland 10.5

The release of the Wine-wayland project version 10.5 has been published, developing a set of patches for using Wine in environments based on the Wayland protocol, without the use of XWayland and X11 components. Partially, many developments of Wine-wayland, including the winewayland.drv driver, have already been incorporated into the main Wine build. This new release is notable for its synchronization with the Wine 10 branch (utilizing Wine 10.5) and the update of DXVK, VKD3D, and Mangohud versions. Instead of FSYNC, the recently accepted Linux kernel driver ntsync is used, which implements a set of synchronization primitives used in the Windows NT kernel. The size of installation packages has been reduced from 120 MB to 99 MB.

Distributions can use Wine-wayland to create Wayland environments with support for running Windows applications without requiring X11-related packages to be installed. Wine-wayland allows for the launching of games and applications that utilize the Vulkan and Direct3D 9/11/12 graphics APIs. Direct3D support is implemented through the DXVK layer, which translates calls to the Vulkan API. To enhance the performance of multi-threaded games, the ntsync driver is utilized, and AMD FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) technology is applied to improve image quality when scaling on high-resolution screens.

Games verified to work in Wine-wayland:

  • ABZU
  • Age of Wonders 3
  • Civilization 6
  • Crusader Kings 2
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Dirt 3
  • Divinity Original Sin 2

Release of Wine-wayland 10.5

Additionally, a corrective release of the DXVK layer 2.6.1 can be noted, providing an implementation of DXGI (DirectX Graphics Infrastructure), Direct3D 8, 9, 10, and 11, working through the translation of calls to the Vulkan API. For using DXVK, drivers supporting Vulkan API 1.3 are required, such as Mesa RADV 24.0, NVIDIA 535.183.01, Intel ANV 24.0, AMDVLK 2024.Q1.3, AMDGPU-PRO, and NVK 24.1. DXVK can be used to launch 3D applications and games in Linux using Wine, serving as a higher-performance alternative to the built-in Direct3D implementations in Wine that operate over OpenGL.

The new version of DXVK addresses issues with freezes and crashes on systems with AMD Vega and RDNA4 GPUs, as well as visual artifacts in Unity Engine games on NVIDIA GPUs. Problems with game launches have been resolved for: Assassin’s Creed Origins, Hitman 2, LEGO Batman: The Video Game, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, and Need For Speed: Most Wanted (2005).
