A new version of WineVDM 0.8 has been released — a compatibility layer for running 16-bit Windows applications (Windows 1.x, 2.x, 3.x) on 64-bit operating systems, translating calls from programs written for Win16 to Win32 calls. Launching programs bound to WineVDM is supported, as well as the functionality of installers, making the experience of working with 16-bit applications indistinguishable from that of 32-bit. The project's code is distributed under the GPLv2 license and is based on the developments of the Wine project.
Changes compared to the previous release include:
- Installation has been simplified.
- Support for DDB (device dependent bitmaps) has been added, enabling games like Fields of Battle.
- A subsystem for running programs that require real mode CPU and do not run on Windows 3.0 and later has been added. In particular, Balance of Power runs without modifications.
- Installer support has been improved, allowing shortcuts to installed programs to appear in the Start menu.
- Support for operation under ReactOS has been added.
- Emulation of the x87 coprocessor has been added.
