The zeronet-conservancy project is a continuation/fork of the decentralized censorship-resistant network ZeroNet, where websites are created using Bitcoin's addressing and verification mechanisms alongside BitTorrent's distributed delivery technologies. Website content is stored in a P2P network on visitors' machines and verified by the owner's digital signature. This fork aims to maintain the network, enhance security, transition to user moderation (the current system is ineffective, as 'site owners' often disappear), and ultimately facilitate a smooth transition to a new, secure, and fast network.
Key changes compared to the latest official version of ZeroNet (the original developer vanished, leaving no recommendations or maintainers):
- Support for tor onion v3.
- Documentation update.
- Support for modern hashlib.
- Disabling unsafe network updates.
- Changes aimed at enhancing security.
- No binary builds (they remain a potential attack vector until reproducible builds are implemented).
- New active trackers.
In the near future – removing the project's dependence on the centralized zeroid service, increasing performance, enhancing code audits, and introducing new secure APIs. The project is open to contributors in all areas.
