On March 9, a mobile browser was launched Firefox Preview version 4.0. The browser is being developed under the codename Fenix and is seen as a replacement for the current Firefox browser for Android.
The browser is built on the GeckoView, based on Firefox Quantum, as well as a set of libraries Mozilla Android Components. GeckoView is a version of the Gecko engine packaged as a separate library that can be updated independently of the browser, while other components of the browser, such as libraries for managing tabs and more, have been offloaded to Mozilla Android Components.
Changes include:
- The ability to connect extensions based on API WebExtension. Unfortunately, only uBlock Origin is currently available.
- The homepage now displays a list of 'permanent' sites, a selection generated based on browsing history.
- Settings now include an option to select the application language.
- It is now possible to open a site when there is a certificate error.
