Today, September 12, 2019, nearly 6 months after development began, the latest version of the desktop environment — GNOME 3.34 — has been released. It introduces around 26 thousand changes, including:
- Visual updates for several applications, including the desktop itself — for example, the settings to choose the desktop background have been simplified, making it easier to change the default wallpaper to something more interesting. (Image)
- Custom folders have been introduced in the menu. Now, just like on a mobile device, you can drag the icon of one app over another to combine them into a folder. If you remove an icon from the folder, the folder will also be deleted. (Image)
- The default browser, Epiphany, now includes sandboxing for processes that handle webpage content. They are restricted from accessing anywhere except the directories necessary for the browser's operation.
- The GNOME Music player has been rewritten (we need more players!), and it now updates the music library directories specified to it, implements gapless playback between tracks, and has an updated design for library pages. (Image)
- The window manager Mutter has learned to launch XWayland on demand, rather than keeping it constantly loaded.
- The Builder IDE has added a built-in DBus inspection mode.

- GTK 3.24.9 and the new version of Mutter have added support for the XDG-Output protocol, which leads to significant improvements in working with fractional scaling when using Wayland.
- The Sysprof profiler has added additional parameters for tracking, including monitoring power consumption. The program interface has also been significantly redesigned.
- Automatic startup of the new search provider after the application is installed has been added without the need to restart gnome-shell.
- The Photos, Videos, and To Do applications have received new icons.
- For applications that use Flatpak isolation, direct access to Gnome's clock and weather has been added.
