Milton 1.9.0 Released – Computer Painting and Drawing Software

Took place release Milton 1.9.0, a painting program for infinite canvases geared towards computer artists. Milton is written in C++ and Lua, and is licensed under GPLv3. It uses SDL and OpenGL for rendering.

Binary builds are available for Windows x64. Despite having build scripts for Linux and MacOS, there is no official support for these systems. If you want to build it yourself, an old discussion on GitHubis known so far, only cases of successful builds of previous versions.

Developers warn: "Milton is neither an image editor nor a raster graphics editor. It is a program that allows you to create drawings, sketches, and paintings." Generally, vector representation implies transformation of graphic primitives. In operation, Milton resembles raster counterparts more: it supports layers, allows drawing with brushes and lines, and includes blurring. However, due to the use of vector format, it allows for nearly infinite detail in images. The application employs an HSV color scheme, rooted in classical color theories. The drawing process in Milton can be watched on YouTube.

Milton saves every change and supports an infinite number of undos and redos. Export to JPEG and PNG is available. The program is compatible with graphic tablets.

New features of version 1.9.0:

  • soft brushes;
  • transparency dependence on pressure;
  • rotation (using Alt);
  • brush sizes set relative to the canvas.
