GNU CSSC is, I remind you, a free alternative to SCCS.
The Source Code Control System (SCCS) was the first version control system developed at Bell Labs in 1972 by Marc Rochkind for IBM System/370 computers running OS/MVT. Later, a version was created for PDP-11 running the UNIX operating system. SCCS was subsequently included in several UNIX variants. The SCCS command set is now part of the Single UNIX Specification.
SCCS was the most widely used version control system until the emergence of RCS. Although SCCS is now considered outdated, the file format developed for it is still used by some version control systems, such as BitKeeper and TeamWare. The Sablime system also supports SCCS files. To store changes, SCCS uses a technique called interleaved deltas. This technique is employed by many modern version control systems as the basis for sophisticated merging methods.
