On September 13th, without fanfare or drum rolls, the latest, fifth beta version of OC Haiku was released. However, its compatibility with BeOS R5 is now preserved only within the framework of 32-bit builds.
The hardware requirements in their current form are traditionally modest —
Minimum (32-bit): Intel Pentium II, AMD Athlon; 384MB RAM; 800×600 display; 3GB disk space.
Recommended (64-bit): Intel Core i3, AMD Phenom II; 2GB RAM; 1366x768 display; 16GB disk space.
New features include: a new theme customization system (3 primary colors are set, with the other thirty automatically calculated, available in both light and dark variations based on the chosen panel color); the file manager now intuitively handles read-only files and folders; support for USB audio devices has been introduced, although currently in a limited capacity; networking improvements (for example, TUN/TAP driver for creating VPNs); a ton of new software ports — along with many other minor and not-so-minor additions.
Additionally, the project has gained another permanent developer (who is actually responsible for the GUI enhancements), which is quite pleasant news. So, despite everything, the project is alive and kicking.
