Jellyfin is a free licensed media server. It serves as an alternative to Emby and Plex, providing media streaming from a dedicated server to end-user devices through various applications. Jellyfin is a fork of Emby 3.5.2 and has been ported to the .NET Core framework to ensure full cross-platform support. There are no premium licenses, paid features, or hidden plans: it is simply developed by a team that wants to create a free system for managing a media library and streaming data from a dedicated server to end-user devices.
In addition to the media server and web client, there are Jellyfin clients available on all major platforms, including Windows, Linux, MacOS, Android, iOS, Kodi, and more. DLNA, Chromecast (Google Cast), and AirPlay are also supported.
In the new version:
The biggest new feature: SyncPlay, which allows the creation of rooms that other users or clients can join for shared viewing. There are no limits on the number of users in a room, and you can join the same room with the same user from multiple clients.
Migration to Entity Framework Core. Previously, Jellyfin used a combination of several SQLite databases, XML files, and spaghetti code in C# to perform database operations. Information was stored in several places, sometimes even duplicated, and was often filtered on C# instead of utilizing faster database engine processing.
Updated web client. Significant refactoring has been done, with a considerable portion of the code, inherited from the forked project, being rewritten in a more compressed form.
The eBook reading module now supports the ePub format. Other formats, including mobi and PDF, are also supported.
