On April 23, 2020, at 18:20 Moscow time, Canonical released Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, codenamed 'Focal Fossa'. The word 'Focal' in the name should be associated with the phrase 'focal point', as well as something being in focus or in the foreground. Fossa is a feline predator native to Madagascar.

The support period for the main package section (main) is five years (until April 2025). Corporate users can obtain extended maintenance support, which lasts for 10 years.

Changes related to the kernel and system boot

• Ubuntu developers have included support for WireGuard (a secure technology VPN) and integration with Livepatch (for kernel updates without rebooting);
• the default kernel and initramfs compression algorithm has been changed to lz4 to provide significantly faster boot times;
• the OEM logo of the motherboard manufacturer is now displayed on the boot screen when operating in UEFI mode;
• support for several file systems has been added: exFAT, virtio-fs, and fs-verity;
• ZFS file system support has been improved.

• A dark mode for the system interface has been introduced;
• A 'Do Not Disturb' mode for the entire system has been added;
• Fractional scaling for X.Org sessions is now available;
• The Amazon application has been removed;
• Some standard applications previously supplied as snap packages have been replaced with programs installed from the Ubuntu repository using the APT package manager;
• The Ubuntu Software store is now presented as a snap package;
• The design of the login screen has been updated;
• A new lock screen has been introduced;
• The ability to output in 10-bit color mode has been added;
• A game mode has been added to enhance gaming performance (thus you can run any game with 'gamemoderun ./game-executable' or in Steam add the option 'gamemoderun %command%').
