W3C has standardized the Web Audio API

The W3C consortium has announced the adoption of the Web Audio API as a recommended standard. The Web Audio specification describes a high-level programming interface that allows developers to create web applications for audio synthesis and processing using JavaScript. These applications run in web browsers without requiring additional plugins. Use cases for Web Audio include adding sound effects to web pages, developing web applications for audio processing, recording, playback, and music creation, as well as its application in games and sound visualization. The Web Audio API is supported in browsers starting from Firefox 35 and Chrome 14.

The API is based on a graph routing paradigm for audio streams, where multiple AudioNode objects are connected to form the final audio stream. Each AudioNode is associated with a specific audio operation (e.g., filters, transformations, volume adjustments) or defines a sound source/output point (such as audio/video tags, files, microphones, buffers, streaming, and real-time synthesis). Nodes can include both standard capabilities provided by the platform (like sound effects and volume control), implemented in low-level languages, and ones created in JavaScript. Mixing audio streams from multiple sources is permitted.
