After more than 5 years of development and over 800 comments in the discussion of the corresponding merge request (if considering related discussions, then significantly more), the color-management-v1 extension of the Wayland protocol for color and HDR management has been included in the main branch of the project.
This extension allows Wayland clients to acquire the color properties of displayed data and meet the requirements for supporting displays with High Dynamic Range (HDR).
The list of goals pursued by this extension includes:
- reliable color settings management;
- support for professional color management applications;
- support for broadcasting and other high-quality video content;
- support for a variety of monitors and application content, including Wide Gamut and/or HDR;
- provision of basic color management for applications that do not support color;
- provision of adequate color management for Wayland applications that support color but do not manage color.
