A new release has come out of the open platform webOS Open Source Edition 2.24, designed for use on various portable devices, tablets, and infotainment systems. The development of the platform is carried out in an open repository under the Apache 2.0 license, guided by a community that adheres to the principles of a collaborative development management model. This version places special emphasis on optimizing multimedia services to eliminate dependencies between media services, such as interaction between the camera and the media server (uMediaServer). These changes have simplified developers' interactions with various aspects of the API.
The innovations include the addition of a universal service com.webos.service.mediarecorder for recording video from the camera and audio from the microphone, as well as the implementation of separate functionality for previewing data from the camera, exclusively related to the API com.webos.service.camera2. Other enhancements include updating the browser engine to the Chromium 108 codebase, support for building with Qt 6.7.0, improved memory management in the g-camera-pipeline component, and resolving the URL update issue in the Enact browser's address bar.
The webOS platform was originally developed by Palm in 2008 and was used in their smartphones. After ownership transitioned to Hewlett-Packard in 2010, the platform was used in printers, tablets, laptops, and PCs. In 2012, the project was opened to the public, and in 2013, LG acquired it, introducing an open development model, and now webOS is applied to millions of LG televisions and devices. The system environment is formed using tools and basic packages from OpenEmbedded and the Yocto Project, while key components are written using Qt and Chromium. Rendering is performed through a composite manager that utilizes Wayland. By default, the Home Launcher shell is available, specifically tailored for touch screens, representing a concept of interchangeable cards instead of traditional windows.
