As is known, yesterday Microsoft introduced the fresh update for Windows 10 May 2019 Update, which will be released at the end of May and distributed via the Update Center. It promises a light theme, new emojis, and other "goodies." However, it seems that the novelty may bring quite a headache for gamers.
The essence is that in one of the test builds, developers added an anti-cheat system, embedding it into the kernel. Because of this, when attempting to play a certain game, the system crashes and displays the “blue screen of death.” Naturally, this occurs if the player is cheating. However, even the mere act of playing might trigger this. It has been reported that the system can “crash” if a user plays Fortnite, as it uses its own anti-cheat system, BattleEye.
Since the problem is caused by changes at the kernel level in Windows, Microsoft wants game developers to collaborate with software companies for fraud protection. However, this works well in theory. In practice, it is unlikely that all game developers will be so disciplined.
Meanwhile, testing teams have already expressed their negative opinions on this matter, which caused Microsoft to remove the block that could conflict with anti-cheat programs. According to the company, game developers have released patches that fix errors and the “blue screen.” However, those games that did not receive the relevant patches will remain “problematic.”
It is worth noting that at one point, Microsoft similarly tried to embed graphics system drivers into the kernel, causing any graphics failure to take down the entire system. It seems that in Redmond, they are once again stepping on the same rake.
