The layer port for running Windows applications with Wine has been introduced, capable of operating in OpenBSD. The main issue with running Wine in OpenBSD is the restriction in this OS against setting the gsbase register from user space, while this register is used for accessing local thread memory during the execution of Windows applications. In the proposed project, this limitation is addressed through emulation of the segment prefix %gs in the commands.
Among the limitations of the port is the ability to run only 64-bit Windows programs (the WoW64 mode for executing 32-bit Windows applications in 64-bit Unix systems is not yet operational). As an example, the game "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered" was demonstrated running in OpenBSD using wine and vkd3d-proton. Plans mention the intention to utilize the unveil system call for isolation. The port includes 42 patches, is part of the master branch of the ports tree, but has not yet been moved to the "stable" branch.
