Drew DeVault, active developer of the Wayland protocol, creator of the project Sway and the related library wlroots announced in his microblog a new Wayland compositor — Wio, implementation of the window system Rio, which is used in the operating system Plan 9.
Outwardly, the compositor replicates the design and behavior of the original Rio, creating, moving, and deleting terminal windows with the mouse, launching graphical programs within them (the Rio port to X11 from the project Plan 9 from User Space did not replicate the original functionality, merely creating a new window with the program beside it).
Internally, it uses the wlroots compositor Cage to create 'kiosks', with code that allows multiple Wayland displays to run within a single user session. According to DeVault, this is one of the interesting features that showcases the radical design difference of Wayland from X11, where this is simply impossible or hard to achieve.
