YouTube will add AV2 support in early 2027, Intel is preparing SVT-AV2

The Open Media Alliance (AOMedia) has announced the progress in promoting the AV2 video codec, which requires no patent or licensing fees, providing approximately 30% greater compression efficiency compared to AV1 and supporting enhanced capabilities for streaming, video on demand (VOD), video conferencing, and interactive systems. YouTube plans to start broadcasting in AV2 in early 2027, initially only when viewed through the Web. It is also noted that as of March this year, 90% of content on YouTube is available in AV1 format. Google is conducting internal testing of experimental Chrome builds with AV2 support, but has not yet moved changes to the official unstable builds. Support for AV2 in Chrome is expected before broadcasting in this format on YouTube begins.

Intel is developing the SVT-AV2 (Scalable Video Technology AV2) library with implementations of the AV2 encoder and decoder, accelerated using processor extensions for hardware parallelization of computations. Meta intends to utilize AV2 for video distribution on Facebook and Instagram, as it once did with the AV1 codec, and is also showing interest in open audio codecs OAC (Open Audio Codec) and OAR (Open Audio Renderer).
