Simply Linux Release and Alt Server Virtualization on ALT 10 Platform

The release of Alt OS Virtualization Server 10.0 and Simply Linux (Simply Linux) 10.0 based on the Tenth ALT platform (p10 Aronia) is available.

Viola Virtualization Server 10.0, designed for use on servers and implementing virtualization functions in corporate infrastructure, is available for all supported architectures: x86_64, AArch64, ppc64le. Changes in the new version:

  • System environment based on the Linux kernel 5.10.85-std-def-kernel-alt1, Glibc 2.32, OpenSSL1.1.1, as well as support for new hardware.
  • By default, p10 uses a single unified cgroup hierarchy (cgroup v2). The cgroups kernel mechanism is widely used by important and popular tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, LXC and CoreOS.
  • The p10 repository includes pve-backup to create a server that allows you to manage backup copies of virtual machines in PVE.
  • Docker 20.10.11, Podman 3.4.3LXC, 4.0.10/LXD 4.17.
  • Updated official container images: docker and linuxcontainers.
  • Updated images for installation in cloud environments.
  • ZFS 2.1 (can be used to organize storage in PVE).
  • Virtualization systems: PVE 7.0, OpenNebula 5.10.
  • Client part of FreeIPA 4.9.7.
  • QEMU 6.1.0.
  • libvirt virtual machine manager 7.9.0.
  • Open vSwitch 2.16.1.
  • New versions of file systems Ceph 15.2.15 (octopus), GlusterFS 8.4.
  • The Kubernetes container management system 1.22.4 switched to using cri-o.

Simply Linux 10.0 is prepared for x86_64, AArch64 (including Baikal-M support), AArch64 for RPi4, i586, e2k v3/v4/v5 (from 4C to 8SV) and riscv64 (for the first time) architectures. The distribution is an easy-to-use system with a classic desktop based on Xfce, which provides complete Russification of the interface and most applications. Changes in the new version of Simply Linux (non-x86/arm software versions may differ):

  • System environment based on the Linux kernel 5.10.85-std-def-kernel-alt1, Glibc 2.32, GCC10 compiler set, systemd 249.7. Graphical kernel update tools are implemented by the alterator-update-kernel 1.4 utility.
  • Xorg 1.20.13.
  • Wine 6.14 for i586 and x86_64.
  • Graphical shell Xfce 4.16 (interface change due to the transition to GTK+3 (3.22), improved display settings functionality and new design). MATE 1.24 is also present.
  • File manager Thunar 4.16.
  • Network settings management program NetworkManager 1.32.
  • Alterator 5.4 system control center.
  • Browser Chromium 96.0. In riscv64 - Epiphany 41.3 and in e2k - Mozilla Firefox ESR 52.9.
  • Mail client Thunderbird 91.3 - improved work with attachments, there are security updates. In riscv64 mail client Claws Mail 3.18.
  • Pidgin 2.14.3 instant messaging client (available on all architectures except riscv64).
  • Office applications LibreOffice 7.1.8.
  • Raster graphics editor GIMP 2.10 with updated translation into Russian.
  • Vector graphics editor Inkscape 1.1 (present in all architectures except riscv64). Export to JPG, TIFF, optimized PNG and WebP formats has been added, and an extension manager has appeared.
  • Audacious 4.1 audio player with a choice of Qt interface (hotkeys can be configured) or GTK.
  • Video player VLC 3.0.16. In e2k and for riscv64 - Celluloid 0.21.
  • Remote desktop client Remmina 1.4.

Installation images of Alt Server Virtualization and Simply Linux are available for download (Yandex mirror). Products are distributed under a license agreement. Individuals, including individual entrepreneurs, can freely use the downloaded version. Commercial and government organizations can download and test the distribution. To continuously work with Alt Virtualization Server in the corporate infrastructure, legal entities must purchase licenses or enter into written license agreements.

Users of distributions built on the Ninth platform (p9) can update the system from the p10 branch of the Sisyphus repository. For new corporate users, it is possible to obtain test versions, and private users are traditionally offered to download the required version of the Alt OS for free from the Basalt SPO website or from the new getalt.ru download site. Options for Elbrus processors are available to legal entities that have signed an NDA with MCST JSC upon written request.

The support period for security updates (unless otherwise provided by the terms of delivery) is until December 31, 2024.

Developers are invited to take part in improving the Sisyphus repository; It is also possible to use for your own purposes the development, assembly and life cycle support infrastructure with which the Viola OS is developed.
