Igor Sysoev left the F5 Network companies and left the NGINX project

Igor Sysoev, the creator of the high-performance NGINX HTTP server, left the F5 Network company, in which, after the sale of NGINX Inc, he was among the technical leaders of the NGINX project. It is noted that leaving is due to the desire to spend more time in the family and engage in personal projects. At F5, Igor held the position of chief architect. The leadership of NGINX development will now be concentrated in the hands of Maxim Konovalov, who holds the post of vice president for engineering of the NGINX product group.

Igor founded NGINX in 2002 and until the creation of NGINX Inc in 2011, he was practically single-handedly involved in all development. Since 2012, Igor has moved away from the routine writing of NGINX code, and Maxim Dunin, Valentin Bartenev and Roman Arutyunyan have picked up the main work on maintaining the code base. After 2012, Igor's participation in development was focused on the NGINX Unit application server and the njs engine.

In 2021, NGINX has become the world's most widely used http proxy and web server. Now it is the largest free software project made in Russia. It is noted that after Igor's departure from the project, the culture and approach to development created with his participation will remain unchanged, as will the attitude towards the community, process transparency, innovation and open source. The remaining development team will try to live up to the high bar that Igor set.
