TIOBE Software has published the January Popularity of Programming Languages ​​ranking, which, compared to January 2021, highlights the movement of the Python language from third to first place. The languages ​​C and Java, respectively, have shifted to second and third places. The TIOBE Popularity Index bases its findings on the analysis of search query statistics on systems such as Google, Google Blogs, Yahoo!, Wikipedia, MSN, YouTube, QQ, Sohu, Bing, Amazon, and Baidu.

Of the changes over the year, there is also an increase in the popularity of Assembler languages ​​(up from 17th to 10th place), SQL (from 12th to 9th), Swift (from 13th to 10th), Go (from 14th to 13th), Object Pascal (from 19th to 14th ), Visual Basic (from 20 to 15), Fortran (from 30 to 19), Lua (from 37 to 30).

Decreased popularity of PHP (from 8 to 11), R (from 9 to 12), Groovy (from 10 to 17), Ruby (from 15 to 18), Perl (from 17 to 20), Dart (from 25 to 37) , D (from 28 to 38), Julia (from 23 to 28). The Rust language, like a year ago, is in 26th place.

In the January PYPL ranking, which uses Google Trends, the top three has not changed over the year: the first place is occupied by the Python language, followed by Java and JavaScript. The C/C++ languages ​​climbed to 4th place, displacing the C# language. Compared to January last year, the popularity of Ada, Dart, Abap, Groovy and Haskell has grown. The popularity of Visual Basic, Scala, Lua, Perl, Julia, and Cobol has declined.

According to the IEEE Spectrum rating, Python is ranked first, Java is second, C is third, and C++ is fourth. This is followed by JavaScript, C#, R, Go. The IEEE Spectrum rating was prepared by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and takes into account a combination of 12 metrics obtained from 10 different sources (the method is based on the evaluation of search results for the query "{language_name} programming", the analysis of mentions on Twitter, the number of new and active repositories on GitHub, number of questions on Stack Overflow, number of posts on Reddit and Hacker News, jobs on CareerBuilder and Dice, mentions in the digital archive of journal articles and conference papers).
