50 years since RFC-1 was published

Exactly 50 years ago - on April 7, 1969 - Request for Comments was published: 1. RFC is a document containing technical specifications and standards widely used in the World Wide Web. Each RFC document has its own unique number, which is used when referring to it. Currently, the primary publication of RFC documents is handled by IETF under the auspices of the open organization Internet Society (ISOC). It is the Internet Society that owns the rights to the RFC.

The RFC-1 document was written by Steve Crocker (pictured). At the time, he was a graduate student at Caltech. It was he who came up with the idea of publishing technical documents in RFC format. He also participated in the creation of the ARPA "Network Working Group", within which the IETF was subsequently created. Since 2002, he worked at ICANN, and from 2011 to 2017 he headed this organization.
