Acer Joins Linux Vendor Firmware Service

After a long time, Acer joined to Dell, HP, Lenovo and other manufacturers who offer firmware updates for their systems through the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS).

Acer Joins Linux Vendor Firmware Service

This service provides resources for software and hardware manufacturers to keep their products updated. Simply put, it allows you to update UEFI and other firmware files automatically without user intervention. This allows you to automate the process and reduce the number of errors.

Red Hat's Richard Hughes noted that Acer's LVFS deployment began with the Aspire A315 laptop and its firmware updates. Support for other models and other devices will appear soon, although the manufacturers do not give exact dates. The Acer Aspire 3 A315-55 laptop itself is an inexpensive solution based on an Intel processor. Some versions of this model feature NVIDIA graphics, a 1080p display, and come with Windows 10 by default.

Note that last year American Megatrends joined the Linux Vendor Firmware Service. This should help normalize the place of AMIs in the Linux ecosystem and unify UEFI update technologies. As a result, all this will improve security and minimize risks in the event of incorrect or malicious firmware updates. In any case, these are the goals stated by the company.
