AMA with Habr, v 7.0. Lemon, donations and news

Every last Friday of the month, I do an AMA with Habr - I list the list of employees to whom you can ask any question. Today you can also ask us any question, but instead of a list of employees there will be tears of happiness and joy that we have become millionaires. We have you - a million of the best users!

Thousand thousand

Yesterday, some users noticed a "foreign body" in Habr's feed - a picture from our SMM superbison:

What is a million? A number with six zeros that first appeared five centuries ago. If we talk about a million rubles, then in the modern world this is relatively little, barely enough for a new car of the most budgetary class. If a million dollars is a tangible amount that can solve most of the problems of many of us.

But a million people - is it a lot or not? Today, there are only 348 cities in the world with a population of more than 1 million people, of which only 16 are in Russia (can you name them from memory?).

And what about a million people, united by the same interests, gathered on one site, in conditions of closed [for a long time] registration? It’s hard to imagine these scales (but it’s even harder to imagine that 9 million go to Habr without an account).

Surely you are interested in the name "millionaire"? The user became Hyperoglyph - apparently, this is a girl from Vladivostok, but she has not yet contacted.

A million top users, we love you! 🙂

Donations. Results

A month ago we Launched user remuneration for authors of publications, well, or donations. In the announcement post, I suggested that everyone try donating a couple of rubles to find out how it all works.

Summing up.

There were 61 transfers in total (I remind you that I asked to make a test payment). Most of them (53) fell on Yandex.Money — a total of 1704.35₽. 17 transfers for 1₽, 8 for 10₽, 5 for 50₽, 10 for 100₽ and 1 for 150₽. PayPal is in second place: 7 transfers for 3561,59 rubles. Paypal had the smallest payment (0.01₽) and the largest - 3141,59₽ (from a user from Google). In 3rd place is WebMoney, where there was 1 payment per 100 rubles. In general, the figures are quite comparable with survey results.

Total collected: 1704,35 + 3561,59 + 100 = 5365,94₽. A publication with a rating of +86 (within the framework of PAP).

In the post-announcement, I promised to spend all the money raised on charity. In the comments, they suggested making a transfer to the fund "gift a life"- added a couple of rubles from themselves and sent:

If you also received a salary today, then you can also donate to a good deed.

Refactoring of the mobile version of Habr and new features

Of the main innovations of March: added function of sending typos authors of publications and a new section of the site - "News". If everything is clear with the first, then the news appeared just yesterday and I want to talk about them a little separately.

Spoiler about newsHabr has never been a news resource and did not strive to become one. To be more precise, key news did not go unnoticed, but, as a rule, they were not very prompt (but large and detailed). That is, we voluntarily and consciously gave away a huge amount of traffic and citation to competitors, abandoning small notes in favor of long-read publications.

However, a recent audience survey showed that many users consider the lack of news to be a problem for Habr and would like to see this format on the site. We thought... and decided to fix it. As a result, it seems to us that everyone will benefit:

  • All news (that is, information that is relevant in a short time interval) is placed in a separate section and will not be lost among “publications”;
  • “Publications” will leave the main page more slowly, that is, they will get more user attention.

Separating news into a separate section will allow the format consisting of a headline and a couple of paragraphs of text to “survive”, which was previously difficult among “long reads”. For now, this section is maintained by our editors, but soon we will add this feature to ordinary users (and if you can't wait to try yourself as a news writer, then let me know in a personal message). In general, the functionality of "news" is rather in the form of a beta version for now - we have big plans for it, so be patient.

And we also polished the mobile version quite well, the main direction is more meaningful and rational work with data storage on the client. The work was aimed at saving traffic (due to the maximum reuse of already downloaded content) and user resources. A little more detail:

  • SSR now renders a completely finished page (including user data such as a personal feed, avatars, settings, site language, etc.). In practice, this means that the interface of the mobile version has become less "twitchy": now there will be no lags, unnecessary redrawing (re-rendering) of pages and elements;
  • Optimized the work of JS on the client side, minimized the number of requests to the server (we try to reuse as much as possible all the uploaded data that we can);
  • Increased the size of the bundle and downloadable fonts - previously 380 KB were loaded in total, now about 250;
  • Made "skeletons" for publications - now waiting for content to load is not so languid;
  • Added "News": section and block to the feed;
  • Ennobled the plate of the translated article;
  • Fixed problems with redirects;
  • Improved the spoiler;
  • Fixed minor bugs and added some new ones.

Now everything should fly, try it. A little later, we will finalize the comments and other sections of the mobile version.

And now, your questions.
