The publication Gematsu, with reference to Amazon Game Studios, published , dedicated to the announcement of a new MMORPG in the Lord of the Rings universe. There is almost no information about the game; the above-mentioned studio is responsible for development together with the Chinese company Leyou Technologies Holdings Limited. The latter was entrusted with supporting the future project and developing a monetization scheme.
Amazon Game Studios Vice President Christoph Hartmann commented on the announcement: “We want to bring audiences high-quality games based on new intellectual properties and beloved franchises, with The Lord of the Rings at the top of the list. The world of Middle-earth created by Tolkien is one of the most diverse and detailed. The presence of such a universe will allow our team to realize all their creative potential. We have a capable leadership team committed to a project like this, and a staff that is constantly expanding to ensure the quality of the future game."
In 2018, Leyou Technologies, or rather its internal studio Athlon Games, to create an MMORPG in the Lord of the Rings universe, but the company was unable to cope with the task and production ceased. The only thing that is known about the new project from Amazon Game Studios is that it will be shareware and has nothing to do with the upcoming series from the Prime service. The release is scheduled for PC and consoles, it’s too early to talk about the date.
