Amazon and Apple will also reduce the quality of video broadcasts for European users

Yesterday became is known that Netflix and YouTube agreed with the arguments of the EU authorities about the need to temporarily reduce the quality of the broadcast video. Such a move is a necessary measure, since the outbreak of coronavirus has led to a significant increase in the load on the Internet infrastructure in the region. Now, online sources say that Amazon and Apple have made a similar decision.

Amazon and Apple will also reduce the quality of video broadcasts for European users

According to available data, Amazon has already reduced the quality of the transmitted video for European users, while continuing to monitor the situation in other regions of the world. The company is ready to take similar actions in other countries, if the increased load on the Internet infrastructure requires it. Amazon Prime Video currently has over 150 million subscribers and is available in over 200 countries.

β€œWe support the need for careful management of communications services so that the existing infrastructure can cope with the increased demand for the Internet, which is caused by many people now being at home on a permanent basis due to COVID-19. Prime Video is working with local authorities and ISPs where necessary to help avoid any network congestion,” an Amazon spokesperson said.

Apple representatives have not yet commented on this issue, but users of the Apple TV Plus service in Europe have already noticed that the quality of the broadcast video has decreased. At the time of the launch of Apple TV Plus in Europe, which took place last fall, the service was highly appreciated precisely because of the high quality of the broadcast video, so it is not surprising that users quickly noticed its deterioration.

Despite the efforts of the authorities to reduce the load on the existing Internet infrastructure, the situation is unlikely to improve in the near future. Due to quarantine, many people are staying at home, so video streaming services such as Netflix or Prime Video, video platforms like YouTube, and online games will affect the speed of broadband Internet access. An additional load is also created by people who work and study remotely, as they regularly use services that allow organizing video conferencing.
