An Amazon spokeswoman declined to disclose the value of the deal, only saying that the companies share a shared vision of a future where humans work alongside robots to further improve safety and workforce efficiency.

The world's largest online retailer has recently significantly increased the automation of its processing and fulfillment centers using robots developed by Kiva Systems, which it acquired in 2012 for $775 million.

Amazon is also showing growing interest in autonomous driving technologies, recently taking part in a $530 million round of funding for self-driving car startup Aurora Innovation Inc.
