AMD and TSMC do not think to concede to Intel in lithography after 2021

AMD CTO Mark Papermaster was honored at the March Investor Event to speak about the company's plans to improve product technologies. AMD intends to maintain leadership in the field of lithography until 2022 inclusive.

It is known that Intel, after switching to 7nm technology, is preparing to regain its leadership position in many market segments, where it was forced to yield to AMD after failures in mastering 10nm technology. AMD is well aware of the revanchist sentiments of a competitor in AMD, therefore, on the presentation slides for Mark Papermaster's report, the curve of the graph, which is responsible for the dynamics of the "competitor's" indicators, begins to noticeably rise after 2020.

Based on the technological capabilities of TSMC, AMD is also not going to give up. According to the management of the latter, until the end of 2022, AMD will be able to maintain leadership both in terms of the density of placement of elements on a semiconductor chip, and in terms of the ratio of speed and performance. The next two years will be the territory for AMD to develop a more advanced process technology than 7nm. As has been noted more than once, the company prefers not to specify the timing of the introduction of the so-called EUV-lithography. At the same time, she acknowledges that the 7nm manufacturing process for Zen 3 architecture products will be improved over the current generation technology.

Recall that Intel is preparing to start shipping the first 7nm products at the end of 2021, and these will be GPUs for the Ponte Vecchio computing accelerator. Server CPUs will switch to the 7nm process technology next, but already in 2022. As part of the 7nm technology, Intel will start using ultra-hard ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, but will do so later than most competitors. But it is after the release of 7-nm products that Intel expects to restore both its leading positions in many market segments and the frequency of changing lithographic stages - every two or two and a half years. As you can see, AMD is not going to give up without a fight; by 2022, it will already master the 5nm process technology.
