AMD Reveals Ryzen 3000 APUs for Desktops

As expected, AMD today officially unveiled its next-generation desktop APUs. The novelties are representatives of the Picasso family, which previously included only mobile APUs. In addition, they will be the youngest models among the Ryzen 3000 chips at the moment.

So, for desktop PCs, AMD offers so far only two new models of hybrid processors: Ryzen 3 3200G and Ryzen 5 3400G. Both chips include four Zen + architecture cores, and the older model also has SMT support, that is, the ability to run on eight threads. AMD's new APUs are manufactured using the 12nm process technology.

The key difference between new products and their predecessors is clock speeds. The new Ryzen 3 3200G runs at 3,6/4,0 GHz, while the previous Ryzen 3 2200G maxes out at 3,7 GHz. In turn, the Ryzen 5 3400G will be able to offer frequencies of 3,7 / 4,2 GHz, while its predecessor Ryzen 5 2400G could only increase the frequency up to 3,9 GHz on its own.

In addition to the frequency of the processor cores, the frequencies of the integrated graphics were also significantly increased. So the "embedding" Vega 8 in the Ryzen 3 3200G chip will operate at 1250 MHz, while in the Ryzen 3 2200G its frequency was 1100 MHz. In turn, Vega 11 in the Ryzen 5 3400G processor is completely overclocked to 1400 MHz, while in the Ryzen 5 2400G its frequency was 1250 MHz.

Another important feature of the older Ryzen 5 3400G is that it uses solder to connect the metal cover and the crystal. In other APUs, AMD uses a plastic thermal interface. AMD also notes the support of the older new option for automatic overclocking Precision Boost Overdrive. And yet the Ryzen 5 3400G will be equipped with a Wraith Spire cooler (95 W), while the younger Ryzen 3 3200G will receive only Wraith Stealth (65 W). Note that unlike other representatives of the 3000 series, the new APUs support PCIe 3.0, not PCIe 4.0 at all.

As for the level of performance, it will, of course, be higher than that of its predecessors. The advantage is up to 10%, according to AMD. The manufacturer also compares the Ryzen 5 3400G with the slightly more expensive Intel Core i5-9400. Judging by the data presented, the AMD chip wins in both workloads and games. And this is not surprising, because the Ryzen 5 3400G offers much more powerful integrated graphics than its competitor. Separately, AMD emphasizes the ability of its new product to provide a frame rate of at least 30 FPS in most modern games.
