AMD sent in DRM-Next initial support HDMI 2.1 Fixed Rate Link (FRL) for open driver AMDGPUThe change is being prepared for inclusion in the merge window. Linux 7.2, which is scheduled to open in June. For Radeon users, Linux This is an important development: the lack of FRL has long prevented the full functionality of modes like 4K with a high refresh rate via HDMI on an open driver.
FRL is data transfer mechanism HDMI 2.1, which replaced the limitations of the old TMDS approach of HDMI 2.0, is needed for higher bandwidth: modern TVs, 4K/120 Hz, 5K/240 Hz, and other modes where DisplayPort has usually already coped, and HDMI on AMD GPUs in Linux ran into limitations.
History it's been going on for several yearsPreviously, AMD had working code, but was unable to properly publish an HDMI 2.1 implementation in an open driver due to HDMI Forum requirements. In February 2024, AMD engineer Alex Deutscher explicitly stated that an open HDMI 2.1 implementation was impossible without violating HDMI Forum requirements. Now the situation has improved: AMD has begun publishing FRL, DSC patches, and related changes for AMDGPU.
At the moment, the implementation of support does not mean that “HDMI 2.1 is fully operational in Linux", but this is the first real step towards it in the main core. If the patches pass the DRM-Next review, Radeon users will have the foundation for fully functional modern HDMI displays without a closed driver or workarounds.
