AMD Uses DMCA to Fight Navi and Arden GPU Internal Documentation Leak

AMD took advantage United States Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to remove leaked Navi and Arden GPU internal architecture information from GitHub. On GitHub directed two requirements about deleting five repositories (copy AMD-navi-GPU-HARDWARE-SOURCE) containing content that infringes AMD's intellectual property. The statement states that the repositories contain non-disclosure source texts (descriptions of hardware blocks in the Verilog language), "stolen" from the company and associated with both the Navi 10 and Navi 21 (Radeon RX 5000) GPUs already in production, and with the still in development of the Arden GPU, which will be used in the Xbox Series X.

AMD saidthat in December 2019 they were approached by ransomware who said that he had test files associated with current and future graphics products. As evidence, examples of available source texts were published. AMD representatives did not follow the extortionist's lead and succeeded in removing the published information. According to AMD, the leak also affected other files that have not yet been made public. AMD believes that these files do not include information that could affect the competitiveness or security of graphics products. The company has contacted law enforcement and is currently under investigation.

Leak source сообщил, that this is only part of the data obtained as a result of the leak, and if he does not find a buyer for the remaining information, he will publish the rest of the code online. It is alleged that the sources in question were found on a hacked computer in November last year (through the exploitation of a vulnerability, access was gained to a computer with an archive of documents). The creator of the remote repositories claims that he did not inform AMD about the identified gap, as he was initially sure that AMD, instead of admitting a mistake, would try to sue him.
