It seems that the next generation of AMD Radeon graphics cards will no longer have graphics accelerators with 4 GB of video memory, even at the entry level. The company devoted the last publication on its blog to the conversation that in many modern games 4 GB is clearly not enough.
A number of new high-end projects really benefit greatly from having a large amount of video memory to store the necessary resources, work in high resolution and apply the latest visual effects. Today, AMD offers a wide range of graphics cards with 6 or 8 GB of video memory: these are the Radeon RX 570, RX 580, RX 590 accelerators, and the RX 5000 series.
AMD noted that with a lack of video memory, even at 1080p resolution, gamers today may experience a number of problems:
- error messages and limitation warnings;
- reduced frame rate;
- texture issues and gameplay delays.
AMD gave an example that the Radeon 5500 XT 8 GB can run
AMD, of course, emphasizes that it is the leader in the video card market, offering accelerators with more impressive video memory at the same price as the competitor. But more importantly, speaking of the end of the era of accelerators with 4 GB of video memory, the company is unlikely to release such products in the next generation of RDNA 2, which is expected this year.
