American Qualcomm and Chinese Tencent will join forces in the field of mobile games

Due to trade tensions between the United States and China, many companies in the two countries have reduced their cooperation or stopped ties altogether. Interestingly, this has not stopped some technology companies from pooling resources to create new joint projects.

Telecom company Qualcomm, known for its SoCs and modems, said it will join forces with Tencent's gaming division (Tencent Games) to develop various projects related to smartphones, 5G, virtual and augmented reality and even cloud gaming. Considering that giants such as Microsoft and Google are preparing to offer users their streaming game services in the near future, the latter sounds interesting. Both companies will also stimulate interest from developers.

Collaboration between these two organizations is not an end in itself, but makes sense given the scale and benefits they bring. Qualcomm is one of the giants of the semiconductor industry, with chips found in eight out of ten phones worldwide. Tencent is China's largest mobile software company and owner of the popular social network WeChat, a platform that serves 1 billion users and their digital needs, from messaging to payments and more.

Under the new agreement, games developed by Tencent Games such as Game for Peace (the mobile version of PUBG for China) will be optimized for Android devices running Qualcomm Elite Gaming chips like the Snapdragon 855 series. Notable examples are ASUS ROG Phone 2 or Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro, but efforts may expand to mid-tier platforms in the future.

Tencent's ambitions extend into other areas such as retro game streaming services and even PC gaming, and the company is aiming to compete with Steam in the form of WeGame, its own digital marketplace. The Chinese giant is also quietly testing the cloud gaming service Instant Play, which could eventually become a competitor to Google Stadia.
