Analysis of BioShock: The Collection for Switch - the classic received high-quality re-releases

We already wrote on the recent release of the BioShock: The Collection trilogy for the Nintendo Switch handheld console. Now, Eurogamer's digital lab has tested all three titles on desktop and handheld. It looks like the Virtuos Games team did a great job: all three games look and work well.

It's worth noting that when Virtuos was working on Dark Souls Remastered for the Switch, the company heavily used original assets from the previous generation console version of the game, perhaps more suited to the system's limited computing capabilities.

But this is categorically not the case with BioShock: The Collection. It is immediately clear that the company used the updated first and second parts, there are also additional optimizations of the environment, which are so necessary for the Switch. For example, compared to the Xbox One X variant, the quality of the textures is much lower, but the Switch still produces a better picture than the original for the Xbox 360.

The biggest trade-off is frame rate. Whereas modern Xbox One and PS4 consoles run games at 60fps, the Switch runs at 30fps. However, the Switch version not only delivers Xbox 360 and PS3-level frame rates, but also higher fluidity. The performance of the games in the collection is almost always kept at 30 frames / s, and only sometimes the smoothness is broken by a small deviation in the frame rate. On top of that, the picture quality and resolution are significantly higher than the previous generation consoles.

All three games in the collection are aimed at 1080p on desktop and 720p on handheld. However, a dynamic resolution system is used for smooth performance. In stationary mode, the resolution of the original BioShock and its sequel can drop to 972p in heavy scenes, and the more technically complex BioShock Infinite can display a picture in the region of 810p during battles. In exchange, the player almost always gets a solid 30 fps.

There are other simplifications, but not too serious. Reflection quality is reduced compared to Xbox One X, especially in Infinite. There are also simplifications in the rendering of shadows and draw distance, but in general the result is noticeably better than on the old generation consoles, and at the same time, shooters allow you to play in portable mode. The quality of texture filtering does not stand up to scrutiny, but the same claim applies to other console versions. At least in the case of the Switch, this trade-off is more clear.

The conclusion is quite obvious - BioShock: The Collection for Switch is a quality transfer of classic BioShock shooters to the Nintendo platform. So fans who want to be able to immerse themselves in dark dystopias outside the home can pay attention to this collection. Is it true, the collection costs in our area 2999 ₽.
