QIWI Analysis: Due to COVID-19, Russians began to spend twice as much on games in the last two months

As in the whole world, during self-isolation and the absence of many familiar leisure options, the inhabitants of our country are increasingly turning to digital entertainment. The QIWI company has published another study on the costs of Russian residents for games and various gaming materials from March to the end of May.

Of course, electronic payments in QIWI systems were analyzed in relation to Russian and international companies specializing in the sale of games, applications and game content for PCs, consoles and mobile platforms. QIWI experts also studied donations from game streaming viewers on major platforms.

So, according to QIWI data, the turnover of payments in favor of gaming companies in March 2020 increased by 44% compared to the same month in 2019. In April, the growth of purchases intensified and amounted to 93% compared to last year, and in May - 79%. That is, for 3 months of self-isolation, the inhabitants of Russia spent 71% more on games than last year.

The number of transfers also increased: in March - by 4%, in April - by 23%, and in May - by 31% compared to the same months of 2019. During these periods, the average size of transfers grew more strongly - by 38, 57 and 37%, respectively. The Krasnoyarsk Territory became the leader in terms of the average amount of each game operation - there this figure amounted to 643 rubles. For comparison: in St. Petersburg it amounted to 324 rubles, and in Moscow - 357 rubles. QIWI expects that all the positive trends mentioned for the gaming industry will continue to develop in the three summer months.

The most playing regions of Russia in the spring months, according to QIWI data, were Moscow, Moscow Region, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Krasnodar Territory, Rostov Region, Sverdlovsk Region and Nizhny Novgorod Region. The Krasnoyarsk Territory showed the most dynamic growth of interest in games: the turnover of payments for gaming content among residents of this region increased by more than two and a half times compared to the same indicator in the spring months of last year.

The volume of donations from viewers of gaming broadcasts connected to QIWI has been constantly increasing in the spring: for example, in March - by 65% ​​compared to February, and in April - by another 36% compared to March. In general, for the entire spring, QIWI wallet users sent 12% more donations than in the same period a year earlier.
