Apple will switch to ARM processors of its own design in computers and laptops

Apple Company confirmed rumors have been circulating for some time about plans to use proprietary ARM architecture processors in desktop computers and laptops. The reasons for the change in strategy are energy efficiency, as well as the need for a higher-performance graphics core than existing offerings from Intel.

New iMacs/MacBooks with ARM processors will be able to run iOS/iPadOS apps using macOS 10.16, which will be released later this year.
The first devices on their own CPUs will appear at the end of the year, and the plan for the complete transfer of the entire line provides for a 2-year transition period. At the same time, the company is still developing new products on traditional x86_64 processors, and it is also planned to provide OS support for this architecture "for years to come."

In addition, Apple опубликовала another set of sources for low-level system components of the macOS 10.15.3 (macOS Catalina) operating system that use free software, including the kernel XNUMX, Darwin components, and other non-GUI components, programs, and libraries. A total of 196 source packages have been published. Recall that, as before source code XNU kernels are published as code snippets associated with the next release of macOS. XNU is part of the open Darwin project and is a hybrid kernel that combines the Mach kernel, components from the FreeBSD project, and the IOKit C++ API for writing drivers.
