Apple sues the developers of an exact copy of iOS

Apple has filed a lawsuit against technology startup Corellium, which creates virtual copies of the iOS operating system under the pretext of identifying vulnerabilities.

In the copyright infringement lawsuit filed Thursday in West Palm Beach, Florida, Apple claims Corellium copied the iOS operating system, including the user interface and other aspects, without permission.

Apple representatives say the company supports β€œfair security research” by offering a β€œbug reward” of up to $1 million to researchers who can find vulnerabilities in iOS. Moreover, the company provides custom versions of the iPhone to β€œlegitimate” researchers. However, Corellium goes further in its work.

β€œAlthough Corellium bills itself as a research tool for those trying to discover security vulnerabilities and other flaws in Apple software, Corellium's true purpose is to extract profit. Corellium not only helps fix vulnerabilities, but also encourages its users to sell any information they discover to third parties,” Apple said in the lawsuit.

According to official data, the startup Corellium creates virtual copies of iOS to help researchers in the field of information security detect vulnerabilities. Apple representatives say that instead the company sells any information obtained to third parties who can take advantage of the vulnerabilities found to their advantage. Apple believes that Corellium has no reason to sell products that allow the creation of exact copies of iOS to anyone who is willing to pay for it.

In the filed statement of claim, Apple asks the court to prohibit the defendant from selling virtual copies of iOS, and also to force the company to destroy already released samples. Additionally, all Corellium customers must be notified that they are infringing Apple's copyrights. If Apple wins in court, the company intends to demand damages, the amount of which is not disclosed.
