Apple Offers Up to $1M Rewards for Finding Vulnerabilities in iPhone

Apple is offering cybersecurity researchers up to $1 million to identify vulnerabilities in iPhones. The amount of promised security remuneration is a record for the company.

Unlike other technology companies, Apple previously rewarded only hired employees who searched for vulnerabilities in iPhones and cloud backups.

Apple Offers Up to $1M Rewards for Finding Vulnerabilities in iPhone

As part of the annual Black Hat security conference, it was announced that all researchers can now count on rewards for discovering vulnerabilities. A specialist who discovers a vulnerability that provides remote access to the iPhone core without any action on the part of the smartphone user will be able to get $1 million.

Previously, the maximum reward amount was $200, and errors discovered in this way were corrected through device software updates. It was also noted that the company will take a number of steps aimed at facilitating research activities. In particular, Apple is ready to provide a modified iPhone in which some security features are disabled.

Previously, the media wrote that government organizations and third-party companies are offering up to $2 million for the most effective methods of hacking an iPhone, which allow them to extract information stored in the device’s memory. Now Apple is ready to pay a reward that is comparable in size to the amounts offered by some third-party companies.

Let us recall that some private companies, including the Israeli NSO Group, sell smartphone hacking technologies to government agencies. Company representatives say that the technologies they create are licensed by intelligence and law enforcement agencies to prevent and investigate various types of crimes.
