Apple will continue to develop its own 5G modem, despite the deal with Qualcomm

A few days ago, Apple and Qualcomm announced the signing of a partnership agreement, which put an end to their disputes regarding patent infringement. This event will change Apple's smartphone supply strategy, but will not prevent the company from continuing to develop its own 5G chips.

Apple will continue to develop its own 5G modem, despite the deal with Qualcomm

Modems used in modern smartphones are high-tech devices. They allow the user to surf the web, download applications, make calls. Apple started building its own 5G modem last year. The development of such a device usually takes at least two years, and another 1,5-2 years is required to test the resulting device.

Telecommunications companies involved in building communication networks use different equipment and frequencies, so modems used in smartphones must support different technologies. A smartphone sold all over the world must support work in the networks of different telecom operators, which means that it is necessary to carry out not only development, but also testing of future modems.

Analysts believe that despite the agreement with Qualcomm, Apple will continue to develop its own 5G modem. To accomplish this task, several development teams were organized. In total, hundreds of engineers are working on Apple's future 5G modem, whose activities took place on the site of the Innovation Center in San Diego. It is possible that the first iPhones equipped with 5G chips of our own production will appear in a few years.
