Apple convinces Foxconn and TSMC to use only renewable energy for iPhone

Apple said Thursday that it has nearly doubled the number of suppliers using only clean energy for its manufacturing process. Among them are two companies that manufacture chips and assemble the iPhone.

Apple said last year that it is fully meeting all of its renewable energy needs to operate all facilities. These are, in particular, retail stores, offices, data centers and leased sites in 43 countries, including the USA, Great Britain, China and India. However, this statement raises doubts among experts who argue that Apple - however, like other manufacturers - has to buy out "green quotas" in order to compensate for the consumption of energy obtained from "dirty" sources: thermal power plants and nuclear power plants.

At the same time, a significant part of the environmental impact of its activities also comes from the supply chain. Since 2015, Apple has been working directly with companies that use clean energy to make components and devices.

Apple announced that 44 companies are participating in its program to combat climate change and protect the environment. These include Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, whose Foxconn division assembles iPhone smartphones, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, which supplies the A-series chips used in all Apple mobile devices. Previously, Apple disclosed the names of 23 suppliers participating in this program.
