Apple has been in talks with Intel about a possible acquisition of part of Intel's smartphone modem business, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported. Apple's interest in Intel technologies is explained by the desire to speed up the development of its own modem chips for smartphones.

According to WSJ, Intel and Apple began negotiations last summer. The discussions continued for several months and ended around the same time that Apple settled its dispute with Qualcomm.

Sources at Intel told the WSJ that the company is considering "strategic alternatives" for its smartphone modem business and remains interested in selling it to Apple or another company.

Earlier this month, Intel announced it was exiting the 5G smartphone modem business. This became known just a few hours after Apple and Qualcomm announced that they had resolved the conflict and entered into a new supply agreement.

Last Friday, Intel CEO Robert Swan explained, that the company's decision to leave the 5G mobile network market was caused by the resumption of cooperation between Apple and Qualcomm. After this, Intel came to the conclusion that it had no prospects for profitable operation in this market segment.
