Apple will release its own 5G modem only by 2025

There is no doubt that Apple is developing its own 5G modem, which will be used in future iPhones and iPads. However, it will take a few more years for it to create its own 5G modem. As The Information resource reports, citing sources from Apple itself, Apple will have its own 5G modem ready no earlier than 2025.

Let us recall that recently the Cupertino company has hired a number of specialists in the field of modems and fifth-generation networks, including leading developer of 5G modems Intel. However, developing a modem takes quite a lot of time, so 2021 year, as previously reported, it is unlikely that Apple will have its own modem ready.

If the sources' reports are correct, then in the next 6 years Apple will use 5G modems from Qualcomm, with which it recently settled all patent disputes, stopped litigation and entered into a long-term agreement on partnership and licensing of chips. And almost immediately after the announcement of the deal between Apple and Qualcomm, Intel announced that it would stop developing 5G modems, although it was previously planned that it would provide the future iPhone and iPad with modems supporting fifth-generation networks.

At the same time, we note that Intel seems to be planning to put its modem division up for sale. The Information published the following statement from Intel:

β€œWe have world-class 5G modem technology that very few companies have in terms of intellectual property and expertise. That's why many companies have expressed interest in acquiring our cellular modem assets since our recent announcement that we were evaluating opportunities to market the intellectual property we've created."

It is also worth mentioning that according to recent messages, Apple itself is interested in purchasing Intel assets. If Apple does make a deal with Intel, it will be able to use Intel's developments and, thanks to them, speed up the development of its own 5G modem.
