Apple has patented encryption of data displayed on the display

Technology companies patent a lot of technologies, but not all of them find application in mass-produced products. Perhaps the same fate awaits a new Apple patent, which describes a technology that allows you to show false data to outsiders who are trying to spy on what is displayed on the screen of the device.

On March 12, Apple filed a new application called Gaze-Dependent Display Encryption with the US Patent and Trademark Office. This technology can work based on eye tracking of the user when using Apple products such as iPhone, iPad or MacBook. When the function is enabled, the correct data will be displayed only in the part of the screen that the owner of the device is looking at. Most interestingly, the encrypted data will look the same as the correct content being displayed, so that a peeper will not consider it suspicious.

The Cupertino-based company has traditionally placed great emphasis on security and privacy. And this is not the first attempt to deal with the problem of "extra eyes". A few years ago, Blackberry-branded Android smartphones received a β€œPrivacy Shade” feature that completely hid content on the screen except for a small movable window that allowed the user to access data. This feature has been implemented in software.

The Apple patent suggests using software and hardware to implement the feature. This is the complexity of its implementation: it will be necessary to place additional sensors on the front panel of the devices.

It will be interesting to see this feature in action if it is actually implemented.
