RAR 6.00 archiver

The release of the proprietary archiver RAR version 6.00 has taken place. List of changes in the console version:

  1. Added "Skip" and "Skip all" options to the query for read errors. The "Ignore" option allows you to continue processing only with the part of the file already read, while "Ignore All" does the same for all subsequent read errors.

For example, if you archive a file, part of which was locked by another process, and you select "Ignore" when prompted for a read error, then only the part of the file preceding the unreadable section will be saved in the archive.

This can help avoid interrupting lengthy archiving operations, but keep in mind that files added to an archive with the "Ignore" option will be incomplete.

If the -y switch is specified, then Skip is applied by default to all files.

The previously available "Retry" and "Exit" options are still present in the request on a read error.

  2. When used in command line mode, read errors cause a return code of 12. This code is returned for all query options on read errors, including the new "Ignore" option.

Previously, read errors caused the more general return code 2, corresponding to critical errors.

  3. The new -ad2 switch is used to place the extracted files directly into the archive's own folder. Unlike the -ad1 switch, it does not create a separate subfolder for each unpacked archive.
  4. When extracting some files from a multi-volume continuous archive, RAR tries to skip volumes at the beginning and start unpacking from the volume closest to the specified file, resetting the continuous packing statistics.

By default, RAR resets the continuous archiving statistics at the beginning of sufficiently large continuous volumes, where possible. For such volumes, extracting a portion of files from the middle of a set of volumes can now be faster.

This does not affect the speed of unpacking all files from the archive.

  5. Previously, RAR automatically resorted to extracting from the first volume if the user did not start extracting from the first volume and the first volume was available. Now RAR only does this if all volumes between the first one and the specified one are also available.
  6. The -idn switch disables the display of file/folder names in the archive when archiving, extracting, and a number of other commands in the RAR console version. The -idn switch does not affect the display of other messages and the overall percentage of completion.

This key can come in handy to reduce the amount of information you don't need on the screen and reduce processing power on console output when archiving or extracting many small files.

Using the -idn switch may introduce minor visual bugs, such as the percentage complete overlapping the last few characters of the error message.

  7. Removed the -mci switch on the command line. Optimized compression of Itanium executables is no longer supported. However, RAR can still decompress previously created archives that use Itanium executable compression.

Also updated unpacker open source UnRAR up to version 6.0.3.
