Astronauts adopt Mozilla's speech recognition technology to control lunar robots

This week, the creator of the Firefox web browser, Mozilla, announced a joint project with German Aerospace center Deutsches Zentrum fΓΌr Luft - und Raumfahrt (DLR), in which Mozilla DeepSpeech speech recognition technology will be integrated into lunar robotics.

Astronauts adopt Mozilla's speech recognition technology to control lunar robots

Robots are often used in space programs to assist astronauts with maintenance, repair, photographic lighting, and experimentation and sample collection tasks. Basically, of course, automatic devices are used for mining on the surface of the Moon, but their potential is much greater.

The challenge that astronauts may face in space is how to effectively control robots while at the same time solving tasks that require their hands to be free. Deep Speech automatic speech recognition (ASR) and speech-to-text programs provide β€œastronauts with voice control of robots when their hands are full,” according to Mozilla.

Engineers at the German agency DLR are now hard at work integrating Deep Speech into their own systems. They also intend to contribute to the Mozilla project by conducting tests and providing sample speech recordings that could improve the accuracy of the program.

It is not yet known which lunar landers will receive the speech-to-text recognition update, but DLR is responsible for developing projects such as "Rollin' Justin" - a two-armed mobile unit created to test the ability of an astronaut and a robot to work together in difficult conditions.
